Chiado Life
Chiado is the most elegant, traditional, and glamorous neighborhood in the city of Lisbon. It is located between Bairro Alto and Baixa. In this part of the city, well-known Portuguese writers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries used to gather.
The poet Fernando Pessoa was born in Chiado, and there is a statue of him on Rua Garrett.
On August 25, 1988, a fire that started on a nearby street reached Rua Garrett and affected not only shops and offices but also important historic buildings. Chiado was rebuilt thanks to a renovation project coordinated by the famous architect Álvaro Siza, which lasted a decade.
Rua Garrett is the heart of Chiado — the intellectual hub of Lisbon in the 20th century. It is bordered at the top by Largo do Chiado and at the bottom by Rua do Carmo. Around it are located the National Theatre São Carlos, the São Luiz and Trindade theatres, the most famous bookstores (such as Bertrand and Grémio Literário), the century-old Café A Brasileira, and the Archaeological Museum of the Carmo Convent.
The area also stands out for housing well-known international shops (Hermès, Cartier, Benetton…) as well as some of the city’s best cafés, bars, and restaurants.
Separated only by Rua da Misericórdia lies Bairro Alto, which represents alternative Lisbon. Its streets are full of restaurants and bars, graffiti, and hanging laundry — and it is probably the best place in the city to listen to fado music.
